Rivera del Marco Urban Reactivation

Project/Urbanism

Cáceres, 2009-11

The objective for this riverside, origin of Caceres’ UNESCO World Heritage Site, is to create a new sustainable urbanity, both ecological and intense, capable of superimposing coherently natural, productive, socio-demographic, constructive and ludic systems. The proposal unfolds a triple-design strategy for la Ribera del Marco:

  1. First, identify the riverside’s existing potential, assuming that its revitalization must be approached in a holistic way, acknowledging its environmental, productive, connective, demographic and ludic qualities.
  2. Second, detect the opportunities that Ribera del Marco has to offer to the city of Caceres and unravel its latent potential. Caceres has the opportunity to redefine its identity through a model sustainable urban intervention, to rewire its traffic and pedestrian connections, or to introduce student population in the riverside, among other.
  3. And third, propose a series of design strategies to catalize its latent potential, which will thrust la Ribera del Marco towards the future.

This triple strategy will be applied at all scales, from the territorial to the constructive, first, identifying the existing qualities, second, recognizing its potential, and third, adding low-energy structures that will catalyze the existing to reactivate it.
